Father’s Day has always been
a second Mother’s Day
to me
I praise my Mom
Who was both a Mom and Dad
She was there
And now that she is not here
I miss her so
Even on Father’s Day

MY MOTHER
AND GEORGE FLOYD
My Mamma
Also cried out
Mamma! Mamma!
Twice
Before her
Final exhale
Right before she slumped
Forward in the passenger seat
She too wanted her Mamma
The first love of her life
In her final moments
Crying out for maternal safety
Craving primal comfort
And there was no knee on her neck
DYING DECLARATION
Mamma
I can’t get it out of my head
Mamma. Mamma. He cried
My stomach hurts, my neck hurts, everything hurts
He was looking for someone to give him comfort
Mamma
To take away that pain
Mamma
Someone to take him home
Mamma
And close the door
Wipe his brow
Hold him close
Tell him he’s a beautiful boy
Mamma

I believe my father’s heart was
Lost along the way
Like so many men
He carried an exact copy
In his pocket
With his hard candies
Just in case his smile
Wasn’t enough
When he came up the drive
Like a long lost uncle

Someone told me that the birds
will all go quiet soon
Once they find a mate
apparently
that’s when
they stop singing
Unlike us

I’ve said that several times today
I’m sick of white people
Going about their lives
Some hardly skip a beat
After saying oh what a shame
Of course black people shouldn’t be killed
But the looting and the anger
And who takes a child to a riot anyway
Oh sure they say all the right things
Shake their heads and tell me about
Their black friend who is so sad
But where is their outrage
